Monnow Bridge Tower is a rare 14th century stone gate tower. It was founded by Henry of Lancaster, defended on the Welsh side of the River Monnow by the Clawdd Ddu rampart and ditch. It was originally built with a single arched passage and it fortified the late 13th century bridge on which it sits. In the 19th century the gatehouse was opened up for pedestrian use a hipped roof added to the upper story. I believe this is the only remaining example in Britain of a gate actually on a medieval river bridge.
I took the digital image on 28 March 09. I didn't exactly get the same angle. I intend to do better in the future. As you can see it wasn't an ideal day for photographing the tower, there were lots of obstacles, most behind me, and I couldn't stand where I wanted too. Looks like Market day was just closing up.
